The History of the RCMP Marine Services

by Kenneth John Haycock, edited by Peter Vassilopoulos

The RCMP have a long and proud maritime history, but until now that history has not been compiled in a single book available to the public. A new book, The History of the RCMP Marine Services, authored by the late RCMP officer Kenneth John Haycock, and edited and published by one of B.C.’s preeminent marine authors and publishers, Peter Vassilopoulos, has just appeared in book stores. Contact Vassilopoulos at 604-943-4618 or at www.marineguides.com.

B.C. Marine Parks Guide partners with non-profit

BC Parks has donated thousands of copies of the BC Marine Parks Guide to the non-profit BC Marine Parks Forever Society (BCMPFS).

The guides, originally sold for $21.95, will be sold for a $10 donation, with proceeds going back to BC Parks for a park enhancement fund. BCMPFS has already sold more than 1,100 guides. Guides are available through yacht clubs, chandleries and marinas across Vancouver Island and throughout the Lower Mainland.

The guide includes information on all BC Marine Parks, with the exception of Alison Harbour. Charts, pictures, must-see sights and recreational activities for each park are included in the guide. British Columbia has 148 Marine Protected areas (MPA), making it Canada’s most active province in establishing MPAs.

The BCMPFS raises funds to acquire park sites on their own, with the help from BC Parks or in conjunction with other non-profit societies with similar views on conservation. Once lands are purchased by the BCMPFS, the land title is handed back to BC Parks for management.
