There’s no getting around it. The unprecedented rise in the
cost of fuel is making daily newspaper headlines; and as ugly as the situation
is, we’re all going to be paying considerably more at the pump this summer. I’m
lucky in that my sailboat is powered by a 9.9-horsepower 4-stroke outboard.
Still, I wince when I fill up my two five-gallon tanks. As longtime PY
contributor Peter Vassilopoulos told me (he owns a 28' Monaro powerboat), he
fills up while his wife, Carla, goes in and hands over the credit card. He
doesn’t want to see the fuel bills until he gets home. There’s something to be
said for maintaining that attitude.
