A long-time champion for children with special needs in B.C., the annual Pharmasave Boat for Hope charity event once again promises more than 600 kids across the province a day of pirate-raiding, carnival-gaming and water-fighting fun. Three cities are hosting the event: Vancouver on June 14, Victoria on June 7 and Kelowna on June 21.
For the Vancouver event’s 10th anniversary this year, more than 350 little pirates will be conducting raiding missions to five sponsored checkpoints throughout False Creek. The “pirates” of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be marauding with water cannons, while the “protectors” on the Vancouver police and fire boats will be keeping the peace. Once the children’s treasure sacks are full, they’ll head back to Treasure Island at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club for a hearty meal and an afternoon of carnival games and activities.
Boat for Hope is more than just a one-day event. Local boaters, community and corporate partners all help raise funds for charity that are used throughout the year. To date, Boat for Hope has raised more than $650,000 for Variety—The Children’s Charity, a not-for-profit that raises money and distributes grants throughout B.C. for kids with special needs.
The event isn’t open to the public, but its organizers are always looking for skippers to donate their boats and time, as well as community and corporate sponsors.
