The Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival offers plenty to entertain—afloat and ashore. The 21st annual Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival will take place on Granville Island, August 21–24.
Afloat and ashore, there’ll be exhibitions of wooden boats, displays, and hands-on boatbuilding and demonstrations, including knot tying and marlinspike seamanship. Hear (and sing) some sea shanties or join in the workshops, listen to maritime storytellers, go for a row in a replica 18th-century Spanish longboat, check out the skin-on-frame kayaks or join the races on Saturday and Sunday.
Family fun will include the ever-popular Kids’ Boatbuilding and Family Boatbuilding workshops, where families and youth groups build 12' boats and launch them on August 24 around 14:30 hours.
The festival runs from 10:00 to 17:00 each day and admission is free.
On August 22, attend the Maritime Kitchen Party, a special event at the Granville Island Brewing Taproom, where folksinger and sailor Tom Lewis will headline; tickets are $10, doors at 19:00.
Special events on August 23 include the Alder Bay Classic and the Oarlock & Sail Regatta, both for boats 20' and under; and the Wooden Canoe Challenge canoe race.
On August 24, catch a stunning musical performance while waiting for the Family Boatbuilding launch or catch the Spruce Cup sailing race on English Bay starting at 13:30.
