Dangerous Waters: Wrecks and Rescues off the B.C. Coast, by Keith Keller, published by Harbour Publishing, 1997 (303 pp., HB, $28.95). What could be more absorbing than reading about mishaps, tragedies and heroism at sea on our very own coast? Survivors, lightkeepers and rescuers tell each tale, reliving the dangers, the last words of those lost, and their own recognition of the preciousness of life. Often the stories eerily emphasize "destiny" or "chance:" a man climbs onto one rock to be spotted and rescued, while his buddy dies on another outcrop just yards away; a deckhand stays home sick and the man who replaces him is lost when a tug goes down. If you need a safe-boating reminder, this'll do it. But these stories are proof that nature plays no favourites - survival is often an aggregate of more abstract factors.
