Lighthouse Chronicles—Twenty Years on the B.C. Lights, by Flo Anderson. Published by Harbour Publishing, 1998 (222 pp., PB, $18.95). It’s hard to imagine what would propel a couple with four children to leave Vancouver for the seclusion and uncertainties of life on a rock with a light. The challenges would have overwhelmed normal mortals. Imagine having to home school children in four different grades, waiting weeks for provisions and mail, having no access to doctors and having to burn scant driftwood for fuel and cooking purposes!
The author and her children spent months cooped in one windswept and ramshackle house on a barren and rocky islet with a husband and father on night shift. On another assignment, Mr. Anderson was forced to work under an incompetent and drunken superior, whose condition made work a security hazard for all. Their adventures will keep you reading on, with lots of understated lessons about sharing, tolerance, and self sufficiency.
From the northernmost station at Green Island near Prince Rupert, to remote Lennard Island on Vancouver Island’s west coast, the author writes of rescues, accidents, the challenges facing growing children and the delights of discovery, solitude and beauty.
