Ed Monk and the Tradition of Classic Boats by Bet Oliver, published by Horsdal and Schubart, 1998 (160 pp., PB, $24.95). Few names are as closely associated with the rugged, reliable work and pleasure boats of the Pacific Northwest as Ed Monk's. Sidney author Bet Oliver whose family cruises on a 42' Monk trawler yacht, has researched Monk's career, designs and writings extensively. She traces the development of his style and philosophy of design and his overwhelming influence on Northwest fishboats, tugs, power cruisers and trawler yachts, quoting extensively from his own books and magazine articles, his associates, builders, owners, and son Ed Monk Jr., a highly-regarded yacht designer in his own right. The Monk. Sr. who emerges from this book was a modest but uniquely talented man who played a huge role in shaping the boats which remain unmistakable and popular on our coast to this day.
