Exploring Southeast Alaska by Don Douglass and Réanne Hemingway-Douglass, published by FineEdge Productions, 2000 (576 pp., PB, $68.95). The latest in the Douglass’ series of cruising guides is every bit as imposing as the landscape and waters it describes. A much-expanded revision of Exploring The Inside Passage to Alaska, this volume focuses less on getting to “Southeast” and far more on where to go, what to see and, in particular, where to anchor once you’re north of Dixon Entrance. The FineEdge format—detailed descriptions of anchoring sites and conditions based on tested local knowledge, extracts from Sailing Directions or Coast Pilot, chart references, waypoints, and maps of many sites—is familiar. The authors claim to cover virtually all spots to anchor in Southeast Alaska—1,200 in all. Introductory chapters and sidebars are packed with information on local conditions, weather, navigation, U.S. and Canadian charts and anchoring; an appendix details various itineraries. The authors manage to be encouraging to first-timers, yet realistic about the challenges of wilderness cruising. In fact, Exploring Southeast Alaska succeeds on all levels: as an essential helm-side guide, a useful planner and a “dreamer’s book” to get you fired up to go in the first place.
