Exploring the San Juan and Gulf Islands by Don Douglass and Reanne Hemmingway-Douglass, published by FineEdge Productions, 1998 (318 pp., PB, $57.95). The latest in the Douglasses' series of West Coast cruising guides covers the waters from the Deception Pass and Victoria in the south to Nanaimo in the north, focusing on the coast's most intimate and accessible cruising grounds, the San Juan and Gulf Islands. The format is familiar from previous FineEdge volumes on the West Coast, the north and south coasts and the Inside Passage, emphasizing tested local knowledge of hundreds of anchorages and marinas - including waypoints for all and large-scale maps of many - and providing detailed piloting and route-planning information. A welcome addition, however, are informative and entertaining sidebars on the history, natural lore and cruising life of the islands by a host of contributors.
