Exploring The South Coast of British Columbia, 2nd ed. by Don Douglass and Réanne Hemingway-Douglass, published by FineEdge Productions, 1999 (480pp, PB, $57.95). In a series of books which covers the coast from Puget Sound to Southeast Alaska, the Douglasses emphasize detailed cove-by-cove descriptions, including hazards, extracts from Sailing Directions and Small Craft Guides, waypoints for entrances and prime spots to drop the hook and, in many cases, detail maps of key anchorages. Most entries reflect the authors’ first-hand local knowledge, including anchor “tests” of bottom material and holding. This new edition is vastly expanded from the 1996 original, with entries on more than 1,200 anchor sites from Victoria to Queen Charlotte Strait. Don Douglass says this volume is the first to document all anchoring sites on the South Coast, including about 200 unnamed coves.
