Proven Cruising Routes, Vol. 1—Seattle to Ketchikan by Kevin Monahan and Don Douglass, published by FineEdge Productions, 2000 (222 pp., PB, $45.95). This unique reference book by cruising guide publishers FineEdge is not a cruising guide, but a detailed compendium of proven courses along the Inside Passage, composed of precise waypoints and routes. In five chapters which cover the major stretches of the Inside Passage, the authors offer “express routes” as well as scenic or sheltered alternates and shortcuts—34 routes in total. Maps on left-hand pages illustrate waterways, waypoints and routes, while tables on facing pages identify the waypoints, chart number and datum, set out their Lat/Long coordinates, and offer courses and distances from one point to the next. Each table also includes cautions and comments about local conditions and hazards. For computerized navigators, it’s also available on disk.
