Guiding Lights: British Columbia's Lighthouses and their Keepers by Lyn Tanod; Photos by Chris Jaksa. published by Harbour Publishing, 1998 (112 pp., HC, $18.95). Full of stunning full-colour photographs and touching stories of lives lived "on the lights," Guiding Lights is a tribute to the tradition of staffed lighthouses on the B.C. coast - a tradition that came close to ending in a highly controversial federal government campaign to destaff the lights earlier this decade. Even with the recent announcement that keepers at the rest of B.C.'s staffed lights would stay, the future of lightkeeping is far from secure. Tanod and Jaksa's book beautifully illustrates why staffed lights are an important - if not essential - service and what kind of people dedicate their lives to watching the ocean from the most isolated and wind-swept corners of the B.C. coast.
