Painter, Paddler: The Art and Adventures of Stewart Marshall, by Andrew Scott, published by TouchWood Editions, 2003 (144 pp., HC, $44.95). You aren’t likely to see Sointula-based artist Stewart Marshall on the big city, cocktail-party gallery circuit, though Marshall’s distinctive work is on par with B.C.’s finest landscape painters. His dramatic watercolours and acrylics of mountains, clouds and spray-drenched islands capture the very essence of our spectacular coast. Marshall has kayaked alone for thousands of kilometres along the coasts of B.C. and Alaska living largely off the land and sea and painting along the way.
Painter, Paddler brings Marshall’s work to the public for the first time. But this is much more than a book of wonderful paintings. It is a combination of taped interviews, Stewart’s journal entries and writings compiled over 10 years. Scott has done an admirable job of putting it all together and documenting Stewart’s travels and adventures along the coast.
