At 416’, Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen’s Octopus is currently the fifth-largest super-yacht in the world. Manufactured by Lürssen of Kiel, Germany, it was the world’s largest yacht when it came off the line in 2003. She has eight 2,400-hp Mercedes-Benz diesel engines and a pair of 6-megawatt  ABB electric motors. Top speed is 20 knots per hour, and she has a range of up to 8,000 nautical miles. She carries 849,446 litres (18,6685 Imperial gallons) of fuel and 174,886 litres (38,469 Imperial gallons) of water.

The Octopus at anchorNaval architect Espen Oeino of Antibes and Lürssen Werft of Kiel, Germany, designed the steel-hulled Octopus with interiors crafted by Jonathan Quinn Barnett and Christian Grevstad. She is managed by Fraser Yachts of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has seven tenders of various sizes—the largest being 63’ Man of War from Perth’s Vikal International. She boasts two helicopters and a 40-foot, 10-man submarine that is capable of sleeping eight for as long as two weeks. There is also a remote control submarine vehicle designed to crawl the ocean floor.

The Octopus lights up the harbourThe Octopus came with a price tag of $200 million and costs an annual $20,000 to operate and maintain. One of the expenses includes employing a permanent 60-person crew, which includes several former U.S. Navy Seals. She has a worldwide following, with ship-watchers blogging about sightings.
