Dreamspeaker Cruising Guide: Vancouver, Howe Sound & the Sunshine Coast, by Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones, published by Harbour Publishing, 2007 (192pp., PB, $49.95). For those familiar with the Dreamspeaker cruising guides, the release of this third volume is welcome news.
This volume covers the natural gap between The first guide (Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island) and the second (Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands). Included is Howe Sound, Hotham Sound, Jervis Inlet and Princess Louisa, plus southern Texada, Lasqueti and Jedediah Islands. As well, to fill in the missing link between the first two volumes, this new guide includes Vancouver Island from Departure Bay to French Creek.
Like its companions, this guide includes both the popular destinations in the regions covered plus lesser-known spots—delightful nooks and crannies discovered (and often named) by the Yeadon-Joneses during their research and on-the-water reconnaissance. Kicking off each major section is general information on ports of entry, wind, weather, currents and such. The descriptions of the weather patterns in each area are particularly useful—succinct and easy-to-grasp. For each destination, there's information regarding the applicable charts, the approach and the best anchorage. Written descriptions of each destination include tips gleaned from local knowledge and details of what to see and do, while Laurence Yeadon-Jones‚ richly textured, hand-drawn colour maps provide a visual guide. New 2007 edition.
