Jedediah Days by Mary Palmer, published by Harbour Publishing, 1998 (223 pp., HC, $26.95). Mary Palmer and her first husband first visited Jedediah Island in 1949 in search of a summer retreat and, in spite of its untamed ruggedness and primitive accommodations, they bought it. Mary returned, with her two sons, summer after summer until in 1971 she and her second husband Al Palmer made Jedediah their permanent home. In '95, they sold it to the province, turning down much more lucrative offers to  ensure its preservation as a marine park. In Jedediah Days, Mary tells the story of life far from modern amenities where self-reliance and hard work were essential, and draws the reader into the heart and rhythms of a West Coast island. In vignettes interspersed with family photos, she brings to life a time when friends were worth packing a picnic and rowing across a channel for.
