Safe Boating Awareness Week

In Canada, an estimated 16 million people use canoes, kayaks, sailboards, sailboats, fishing boats, PWCs and powerboats each year. With all these people and boats out on the water, problems and safety issues can occur.
This year, May 19–25 marks Safe Boating Awareness Week across North America. The purpose of the Safe Boat Awareness Week is to promote safe boating practices to all recreational boaters. The Canadian Safe Boating Council has been working to engrain safe and responsible boating practices that become second nature to boaters.

This year, the five key points the Council wants to deliver to boaters are:
        • Wear a PFD or lifejacket
        • Don’t drink and boat
        • Take a boating course
        • Be prepared: both you and your vessel
        • Be wary of the danger of cold water immersion
