Solar Showers: A Primer

Solar showers are a simple, eco-friendly solution for space-conscious boaters. These showers use the sun’s energy to heat water, making them ideal for off-grid marine environments where power and space are limited. Typically, a solar shower consists of a black, heat-absorbing bag made of durable materials. The most common material is PVC, but some are made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The bag is filled with fresh water and left in direct sunlight, where it can heat to comfortable showering temperatures (up to 110°F or 43°C) in a few hours. Some models come with built-in thermometres, adjustable nozzles and carry handles for convenience. Once heated, the bag is hung above head height—often from the boom, arch or mast—allowing gravity to provide water pressure through a hose and nozzle. Solar showers offer numerous benefits. They reduce the reliance on onboard water heaters or fuel- based systems, saving energy and conserving resources. They’re also lightweight, portable and easy to store, making them well-suited for small vessels or minimalist setups. In our climate, they are best used in warm summer months, offering a reliable source of warm water for bathing or rinsing off after a swim in the ocean.

However, there are limitations. The effectiveness of a solar shower depends on weather conditions, with overcast skies significantly reducing water temperature. Also, the water pressure and volume are limited, so they’re best for quick rinses rather than luxurious showers.
